Pakistan: Four Arrested in Journalist's Murder; Extremist Islamic Group Shot for his Pro-Israel Comments

Karachi: Police have arrested four people in connection with the murder of a Pakistani journalist Imtiaz Mir who allegedly supported Israel. According to the police, the suspects have confessed to the killing. They claimed they murdered the journalist on the orders of their handler, who is based outside Pakistan.


Police officials, without naming any country, said, "The arrested suspects are educated individuals, and their gang leader resides in a neighboring country." The arrested suspects have been identified as Ajlal Zaidi, Shahab Asghar, Ahsan Abbas, and Faraz Ahmed. They are reportedly associated with 'Lashkar-e-Sarullah,' which is part of the banned Zainabiyoun Brigade.

Imtiaz Mir, a journalist with Metro News Television, was shot dead on September 21, 2025, as he was leaving his office in the Malir area of ​​Karachi. According to Dawn, Mir was traveling home in his elder brother's car last month when six assailants on two motorcycles opened fire on his vehicle on the National Highway. The journalist sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was admitted to a private hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.


Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar stated on Tuesday, October 28, that journalist Imtiaz Mir was targeted because the killers considered him a sympathizer of Israel. Members of an extremist Islamic group, angered by Mir's alleged pro-Israel comments on television, murdered him. The Home Minister alleged that a neighboring country is funding and spreading anarchy in Pakistan.


Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, several members of his cabinet, and leaders of various political parties have expressed grief over the journalist's murder.
