ABC Report: Significant Increase in Circulation of Daily Newspapers in India

New Delhi
: The Audit Bureau of Circulation (ABC) has released certified circulation figures for the audit period January-June 2025. A huge increase has been recorded in the circulation of daily newspapers during this period. ABC General Secretary Adil Kasad said that the average sale of daily newspapers during the period under review was 2,97,44,148 copies, while in the previous period (July-December 2024) it was 2,89,41,876 copies. This growth of 2.77% (8,02,272 copies) reflects a healthy trend for the print media industry.

Adil Kasad said that the latest figures emphasize that readers continue to trust newspapers for reliable, verified and in-depth information. The increase in circulation indicates the strong performance of print, reinforcing its position as a powerful medium for both news consumption and advertising engagement.

According to the report, the total sales of daily newspapers in January-June 2025 recorded a growth of 2.77%, which is close to 3%. The circulation of the top English-language daily 'Times of India' reached 16,40,418 copies, well ahead of Hindustan Times (6,19,280 copies). Among Hindi dailies, 'Dainik Bhaskar' also performed strongly, with a significant increase in total circulation.

ABC data clearly shows that the demand for print has increased in both urban and rural areas, especially among the young and educated class. This growth is part of the post-pandemic recovery. The print industry was badly affected by COVID-19 in 2020, but the recovery process that started from 2024 is now gaining momentum. The ABC report mentions that readers are returning to newspapers in search of in-depth analysis and verified facts.

Hindi, Marathi and Tamil dailies witnessed a growth of 5-7%, indicating that in-depth coverage on local issues keeps readers engaged. This report is an encouraging sign for the print industry. If this trend continues, a growth of more than 5% is possible by the end of 2025. This growth is a positive sign for India at a time when the print industry is declining globally, where digital platforms have overtaken traditional media in many countries. But in India, print still remains the main medium of information.
