Former Journalist Helena Moreno Becomes Mayor of New Orleans in Historic Win
New Orleans: Former journalist Helena Moreno has been elected the new mayor of Louisiana's most populous city, New Orleans. With a 55% majority, she was declared mayor on October 12, 2025. This is a historic victory in a primary election, which hasn't happened since 2010.
Upon taking office on Sunday, Moreno said she was excited and grateful for her victory, but now it was time to get to work. The mayor also launched a website to connect with the public, where residents can sign up for updates and apply for jobs in her administration.
Helena Moreno's term begins at a time when New Orleans is facing challenges in infrastructure, economic development, and population retention. Moreno said her goals for her first 100 days will focus on radical changes to city government.
Voters say they hope the new leadership will help move the city in the right direction. Many residents say they want to see improved roads and better jobs and businesses.
Who is Helena Moreno?
Helena Moreno, 48, holds a degree in journalism from Southern Methodist University in Dallas. Born in Mexico, Moreno moved to the United States at the age of eight. Before entering politics, she arrived in New Orleans as a television reporter in the early 2000s. Elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives in May 2010, Helena Moreno represents District 93, which includes areas such as Tremé, the Garden District, Central City, St. Roch, the French Quarter, Mid City, and the CBD.
Known as a strong advocate for women, Moreno was featured in the award-winning documentary Five Awake for her work against domestic violence. Moreno has also been recognized for her efforts in criminal justice reform, public safety, healthcare, education, and geriatric care.
On the New Orleans City Council, she leads the Climate & Sustainability Committee and the Economic Development Committee, and has previously chaired key panels overseeing utilities, technology, and the budget.
