Journalists Killed in June 2025
Javier Antonio Hércules Salinas
1 June, 2025, Honduras
Salvadoran journalist Javier Antonio Hércules Salinas was shot and killed on June 1, 2025, in Santa Rosa de Copán, Honduras, about 200 km northwest of Tegucigalpa. 51-year-old journalist from the local news Facebook page A Todo Noticias, was brutally murdered by armed individuals on a motorbike while driving a taxi — a job he alternated with his work as a local reporter. The journalist, originally from El Salvador, had been living in Honduras for over ten years and covered issues of local public interest. He had been under the protection of the National Protection System for Human Rights Defenders, Journalists, Social Communicators and Justice Operators (SNP) since October 2023, when he was the target of a series of threats and a kidnapping attempt, from which he managed to escape unharmed. Honduras is one of the most dangerous countries for journalists. From 2001 to 2025, more than 100 journalists have been murdered here, 95% of which are still unsolved.
Turki bin Abdulaziz al-Jasser
14 June, 2025, Saudi Arab
Saudi Arabia hanged journalist Turki bin Abdulaziz al-Jasser on 14 June, who was imprisoned for 7 years for social media posts. The journalist was jailed in 2018 on serious charges like terrorism and treason for posting on Twitter (now X) about corruption related to the Saudi royal family. Al-Jasser had also posted critical comments about armed groups. He wrote articles on the Arab Spring, women's rights and corruption. Between 2013 and 2015 he also wrote a personal blog. It is not known where his trial took place or for how long.
Fereshteh Bagheri
3 June, 2025, Iran
On 13 June, Fereshteh Bagheri, a 28 year old reporter for the Defa Press news agency and the daughter of Major General Mohammad Bagheri, Chief of Staff of Iran's Armed Forces, was killed alongside her father in an Israeli strike that targeted the family home in Tehran. “I wish to be martyred like my uncle. I have read all of my uncle’s books and writings. I have studied the memories of other martyrs. I think about martyrdom constantly,” Fereshteh Bagheri would say, motivated by the inherited legacy and the convictions she firmly upheld.
Saleh Bayrami
15 June, 2025, Iran
Saleh Bayrami, a 35-year-old Iranian media professional and freelance cartoonist, was killed on June 15, 2025, in an Israeli airstrike while driving through Quds Square in the Tajrish neighborhood in northern Tehran. He worked for several media outlet. Bayrami, who studied at Marlik University in Nowshahr, Mazandaran province, worked at Andisheh-e Pouya Monthly Magazine in Tehran for many years — since its inception in 2012. He also worked for Segaam Magazine. “He will always remain alive in our hearts,” the magazine wrote in a post on Instagram.
Nima Rajabpour and Masoumeh Azimi
16 June, 2025, Iran
On 16 June, the Israeli military struck the headquarters of Iran's State broadcaster, the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), in a targeted attack in Tehran. At least two media workers, Nima Rajabpour, a news editor for Iran's State TV news channel Khabar, and Masoumeh Azimi, secretariat staffer at the IRIB, were killed as a result of Israeli air strikes. The bombing came shortly after the Israeli military issued an evacuation warning for the district in Tehran, where the offices of Iran’s State broadcaster are located. 
Mohammad Amin Mahdavi Shayesteh
23 June, 2025, Iran
Mohammad Amin Mahdavi Shayesteh, a journalist of the London-based Persian language newspaper 'Iran International', was hanged on June 23. The journalist was accused of spying for Israel and sending photographs of important places of Iran to Israel. Shayesteh was hanged after the court convicted him of "intelligence cooperation with the Zionist regime". Although Iran did not disclose specific evidence of Shayesteh's alleged spying, officials said he had shared intelligence with hostile entities. 
Salomón Ordóñez Miranda
June 23, 2025, Mexico
Salomón Ordóñez Miranda, known as “Shalom,” a journalist and photographer who ran the Facebook-based outlet Shalom Cuetzalan Producciones, was killed on June 23, 2025, in Pahpatapan, Cuetzalan del Progreso, Puebla, Mexico. He was shot at least twice by unknown assailants around 8:00 p.m. on Privada 15 de Mayo. He died while receiving medical attention at a hospital. Ordóñez covered local culture, security, and community issues, with over 75,000 followers, but reportedly did not focus on sensitive topics like corruption or organized crime. 
Khandaker Shah Alam
June 25, 2025, Bangladesh
Khandaker Shah Alam, a correspondent for the Bangla-language newspaper Daily Matrijagat, was murdered on June 25, 2025, in Nabinagar Upazila, northeast of Dhaka, Bangladesh. The killing was a targeted act of retaliation linked to his investigative reporting on local crime and corruption. Alam was attacked due to his reporting on the criminal activities of Babul Mia, a local figure known as "Tiger Babul Dakat," who was implicated in multiple robbery cases. Alam's coverage had contributed to Mia's earlier arrest and imprisonment. After his release from prison on June 25, 2025, Mia sought revenge for the journalist’s exposés.
Ahmad Saad,
27 June, 2025, Gaza
Palestinian journalist Ahmad Saad was killed in an airstrike by the Israeli army targeting a group of Palestinians in the Al-Tuffah neighborhood of eastern Gaza on 27 June. news sources reported that the bombing of the Al-Tuffah neighborhood in Gaza City left 10 people killed and several others injured.
Ismail Abu Hatab
30 June, 2025 Gaza
Ismail Abu Hatab, a 34-year-old Palestinian photojournalist and filmmaker, was killed on June 30, 2025, in an Israeli airstrike on Al-Baqa Café, a beachfront venue in western Gaza City. The attack occurred around 2:48 p.m., targeting a popular gathering spot for journalists, activists, and residents due to its internet access and charging facilities. The airstrike killed at least 24 people, including Abu Hatab, and injured dozens, among them journalist Bayan Abu Sultan, who was struck by shrapnel. Abu Hatab had been documenting life in Gaza through his photography and filmmaking, despite surviving a previous Israeli airstrike in November 2023 that left him with severe leg injuries.
