Ted Turner, The American Media Mogul Who Changed The World of TV News Channels

In 1991, Time magazine honored Ted Turner as "Man of the Year." During a TV interview in September 2018, he revealed that he was suffering from Lewy body dementia.

Ted Turner, founder of the Cable News Network (CNN) and a veteran of the American media world, will be remembered for revolutionizing the world of television news. He was a visionary who completely transformed the way news was consumed. With the 24-hour news model, he introduced the world to a concept where people could watch any event live and instantaneously. This model has become an essential element of almost every major news channel in the world today.

In 1980, Ted Turner challenged the traditional system of news broadcasting, establishing CNN as the world's first 24-hour news channel. Through CNN, he first demonstrated to the world that news was not limited to a fixed timeframe, but could be viewed continuously, live, in real time. This change not only transformed the direction of journalism but also completely changed the way viewers viewed and understood news.

CNN's live coverage of the 1990-91 Gulf War established the network internationally. Following CNN, he launched several other news platforms, including Headline News and CNN International. In 1991, Time magazine honored Ted Turner as "Man of the Year." Turner was praised as someone who influenced the course of global events and gave viewers in 150 countries a firsthand account of history.

Ted Turner wasn't limited to news channels. His business empire included cable TV's first superstation, movie and cartoon channels, and major sports franchises. Expanding significantly into the media and entertainment world, he launched globally successful channels like Cartoon Network, TNT, and Turner Classic Movies. In 1996, Turner Broadcasting System merged with Time Warner Inc. He was also part of the landmark 2001 merger between AOL and Time Warner.

In 2003, Ted Turner stepped away from any active role in the company and resigned from the board in 2005. In the latter part of his career, Turner dedicated himself to social service and environmental protection, including donating $1 billion to the United Nations Foundation. He also dedicated his life and considerable wealth to environmental conservation and the fight against climate change. He was one of America's largest landowners and protected his lands for wildlife protection, particularly the protection of bison.

Ted Turner died on May 6, 2026, at the age of 87. He breathed his last at his home in Lamont, Florida. During a TV interview in September 2018, he revealed that he was suffering from Lewy body dementia. This disease affects a person's memory, thinking ability, and physical movements. He had been facing this health challenge for the past few years.

Ted Turner began his career in his father's billboard advertising business. But his vision was far more forward-thinking. In the 1970s, he purchased a small television station in Atlanta, which was then suffering from persistent losses. He understood the proper use of satellite technology and began broadcasting this small station across the United States, which later became known as TBS (Turner Broadcasting System).

Turner's life was multifaceted. He was also an accomplished sailor and won the prestigious America's Cup in 1977 by participating in international sailing. Turner also owned the baseball team the Atlanta Braves and the basketball team the Atlanta Hawks.

Ted Turner was married to famous actress Jane Fonda, one of his three marriages. He have a total of five children. Turner's contributions will always be remembered as a revolutionary change in media history. Whenever breaking news flashes on TV screens, Ted Turner's legacy will always be remembered.

President Donald Trump expressed his condolences on his passing in a post on Truthout Social Media: "Ted Turner, one of the Greats of All Time, just died. He founded CNN, sold it, and was personally devastated by the Deal because the new ownership took CNN, his “baby,” and destroyed it. It became woke, and everything that he is not all about. Maybe the new buyers, wonderful people, will be able to bring it back to its former credibility and glory. Regardless, however, one of the Greats of Broadcast History, and a friend of mine. Whenever I needed him, he was there, always willing to fight for a good cause!"- President DONALD J. TRUMP
