"Remove Journalist Naznin Munni or we will set Fire to the Channel's Office," Extremists Threaten Global TV in Bangladesh

Naznin Munni, a popular journalist and news anchor in Bangladesh, is the Head of News at Global TV.

Dhaka
: In Bangladesh, the difficulties faced by journalists and media houses are increasing under the hardline Yunus government. In the latest incident, extremists have threatened the director of Global TV, saying they will set fire to the channel's office if journalist and anchor Naznin Munni is not fired.

Naznin Munni, Head of News at Global TV, says she is not afraid of such threats. Naznin is a popular journalist in Bangladesh. She supported the student movement that took place in July-August last year. She hosted dozens of TV shows and wrote numerous posts on social media in support of the students.

In a recent Facebook post, Munni wrote that 7-8 people came to the Global TV office in Tejgaon and issued threats. Naznin said this threat is part of a larger pattern of intimidation against journalists and independent media. She wrote, "About 7-8 people, claiming to be from the city unit of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, came to my office and threatened that if I didn't quit my job, they would set fire to the office, just like they did to Prothom Alo and The Daily Star."

Munni said she was not in the office that evening. After finishing a meeting, she went to meet a friend at 8 pm. A short while later, some people met with the channel's Managing Director, Ahmed Hossain, and complained that the coverage of the death of Inqilab Manch spokesperson Usman Sharif Usman Hadi was not adequate. They further said, "The young men who issued the threats asked the channel's MD, 'Why have you hired Naznin Munni? She is an Awami League supporter. Fire her.'" However, the Managing Director clarified to the young men that Naznin has no connection with the Awami League.

Recently, following the killing of hardline leader Sharif Usman Hadi in Bangladesh, the offices of media groups Prothom Alo and The Daily Star were set on fire. Dozens of media personnel were trapped inside the offices during the incident. The threat to burn down Global TV makes it clear that extremist forces are becoming increasingly emboldened here, and critics of the government are being silenced through violence and threats.
