BANGLADESH: Senior Journalist Anis Alamgir Arrested in Anti-Terrorism Case, Police Seek Seven-Day Remand

The investigating officer of the case, Inspector Mohammad Moniruzzaman, filed a remand application at the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Dhaka on Monday, December 15. Police have sought a seven-day remand to interrogate the journalist. Sub-Inspector Shamim of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Prosecution Department said that a hearing on the remand application is expected soon.
Anis Alamgir was taken to the Detective Branch office for questioning on the evening of December 14. He later told the media over the phone around 8:30 pm that he had been brought to the Detective Branch after being picked up from a gym in the Dhanmondi area.

DMP Detective Branch Chief Mohammad Shafiqul Islam said that journalist Anis Alamgir, actress Meher Afroz Shaon, model Maria Kispotta, and Imtu Ratish Imtiaz have been named as accused in this case. Aryan Ahmed, the central organizer of the July Revolutionary Alliance, filed a case against all of them under the Anti-Terrorism Act at the Uttara (West) Police Station on the morning of December 14.
Alamgir has worked with several media outlets, including the Bangladeshi daily Ajker Kagoj, and has recently been in the spotlight due to his comments on television talk shows. In recent days, Alamgir had expressed critical views on the activities of the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.
