Journalists Killed in April 2025


The year 2025 was not a good one for journalists worldwide. Incidents of violence against journalists continued throughout the year. A total of 10 journalists were killed in different parts of the world in April 2025. We are providing brief details of these journalists:

Mohamed Salah Bardawil

Palestinian journalist Mohamed Salah Bardawil, his wife and children were killed in an Israeli attack on Tuesday 1 April 2025 in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis. Bardawil was a journalist for Hamas-affiliated Aqsa Radio. He was the nephew of Salah Bardawil, a well-known member of Hamas' political bureau, who was killed in an Israeli attack a month before this incident.

The burnt body of Shahdeb Dey, a 38-year-old journalist who ran the local news outlet News Republic Andaman, was found on April 2, 2025, in Deshbandhu Nagar, Diglipur in North Andaman district, confirming a gruesome and premeditated murder. The Andaman and Nicobar Police registered an FIR at the Diglipur police station and formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to ensure a transparent investigation. Four accused – S. Gangaiah, Ramasubramanian, M. Ramesh, and a woman, Bitika Malik – were arrested in connection with the case. The investigation revealed that Shahdeb was murdered the same night he went missing from the Nehru Yuva Kendra office in Diglipur. In a horrific attempt to erase all traces, his body was burned in DB Village, while some of the remains were allegedly thrown into the creeks of Shibpur. According to a report submitted to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Shahdeb was actively exposing illegal activities in the area. It is believed that he was targeted because of his work. The motive for the murder was found to be linked to Shahdeb Dey's reporting.

The body of 25-year-old video journalist Harshit Shukla was found hanging from a tree 200 meters away from his house on April 2, 2025 in Tiwaripur, Bithoor, Kanpur. Harshit worked for a YouTube channel. His marriage was fixed for 16th April. The family alleged that he was murdered and the incident was made to look like a suicide, but till date it is not known what happened to Harshit?

Palestinian journalist Islam Nasr al-Din Muqaddad was killed on April 5, 2025, in an Israeli airstrike that targeted her home in the Al-Amal neighborhood, west of Khan Yunis, in southern Gaza. Her young son, Adam Abdel Hadi, and her husband, Ahmad Abdel Hadi, were also killed in the same attack. Before her death, she was waiting to reunite with her daughter, who was receiving medical treatment in Egypt.

Journalist Helmi Al-Faqaawi was killed on April 7, 2025, in an Israeli airstrike that targeted a tent for journalists near Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, located in the southern Gaza Strip. The attack occurred around 2:00 AM local time, setting the tent ablaze. Al-Faqaawi, a reporter for the Palestine Today news agency, was among at least two people killed in the strike, which also injured nine other journalists, some seriously. Reports indicate that the tent was clearly designated for media personnel, and the strike has been widely condemned as part of a broader pattern of violence against journalists covering the conflict in Gaza.

Palestinian journalist Ahmed Mansour, who was severely burned in a fire caused by an Israeli airstrike, died on April 8, 2025. Mansour, a reporter for the Palestine Today news agency, was seen engulfed in flames on Monday, April 7, while his colleagues desperately tried to rescue him. The Israeli attack targeted the journalists' tent near the Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis, southern Gaza.

Allah Dino Shar was a journalist who worked for Hum News. He was found dead in Khairpur District, Sindh, Pakistan, on April 9, 2025. His body showed signs of torture and was discovered in a remote area near Thari Mirwah. Police detained several suspects, including Niaz Badami, Waqas Chana, Faheem Chana, Ahad Chana, and Naeem Chana, who allegedly confessed to the killing.

Sudanese journalist and the director of the Radio Sector of the North Darfur State Radio and Television Corporation, Ahmed Mohamed Saleh Sayyidna, was killed on 14 April 2025 by indiscriminate shelling carried out by the Rapid Support Force (RSF) paramilitary group in the city of El Fasher, in the Darfur region. According to the Sudanese Journalists Syndicate, a journalist familiar with the matter, speaking on condition of anonymity, Sayyidna was attacked indiscriminately. Beyond his role at the state radio, Sayyidna had decades of experience in cultural and theatrical activities in El Fasher since the 1990s. He was the creator of the radio series Rakoubat Abba Saleh, broadcast on UNAMID radio, supported by the United Nations.

An Israeli missile strike in Gaza on April 16, 2025, killed a Palestinian photojournalist featured in a documentary set to premiere in Cannes, France, in May. The journalist Fatma Hassona, 25, was known for her photographs of the civilian casualties of Israeli military actions, died in her home, along with several of her close family members, the film’s director Sepideh Farsi told Deadline. Hassona had just gotten engaged a few months ago. Farsi had spoken to Hassona and her family recently. “One of the sisters was pregnant,” she said. “On a video call two days ago, she showed me her belly. It’s so horrible and devastating.” Hassona was killed right after learning her film Put Your Soul On Your Hand and Walk was selected for a parallel section of Cannes Film Festival, ACID. Farsi—whose film credits include the Siren and Red Rose—was in the middle of figuring out how to arrange Hassona’s travel to the film festival. She said Hassona was very concerned about being able to return to Gaza right after the event. Put Your Soul On Your Hand and Walk is a 110-minute documentary film that follows a nearly year-long exchange that took place between Farsi and Hassona after the Israel-Hamas war started on Oct. 7, 2023.

Palestinian writer and journalist Tamer Mekdad was killed in an Israeli airstrike targeting his home in the Tal al-Zaatar area of ​​the northern Gaza Strip on April 17, 2025. The attack also killed several members of Mekdad's family, including his young daughter. Mekdad is often mentioned in discussions about the dangers faced by journalists in conflict zones, particularly Gaza. Media organizations and advocacy groups cited his death, along with those of several other journalists, as part of broader concerns about press safety and access to information during the war.
