Journalists Killed in March 2025




The year 2025 was not a good one for journalists worldwide. Incidents of violence against journalists continued throughout the year. A total of 17 journalists were killed in different parts of the world in March 2025. We are providing brief details of these journalists:

Local journalist Kristian Uriel Zavala was murdered on March 2, 2025, in the municipality of Silao, in the Mexican state of Guanajuato. He was killed along with another man inside a car in the area of ​​Condado de la Pila. Two young men were found dead from gunshot wounds inside the vehicle. The other victim was identified as 22-year-old Axel N. Zavala collaborated with crime news outlets in Silao, working as a photojournalist at Reporte Silao and managing the Facebook media outlet Silaoense MX.

Patricio Ernesto Aguilar Vásquez, director of the community newspaper El Libertador de Quinindé, was murdered on 4 March 2025 in Quinindé, a town in the province of Esmeraldas.Patricio Ernesto Aguilar Vásquez, 55, was an experienced journalist with a career that spanned over 30 years. According to National Police reports, gunmen ambushed him inside a home in the Fundo Limón neighborhood, a conflict-ridden area of ​​Quininde. They shot the journalist multiple times, leaving at least 27 shell casings at the crime scene. Aguilar had received threats for reporting on violence and investigations in the region. His murder came amid a surge in violence in Esmeraldas, where at least five violent deaths had been recorded just hours before the incident.

Dainik Jagran journalist Raghavendra Bajpai was shot dead in the Sitapur district of Uttar Pradesh on March 8, 2025. The attackers hit the journalist's bike on the Lucknow-Delhi National Highway, fired several rounds at him, and fled the scene. Raghavendra had traveled to Sitapur by bike that afternoon, from where he was returning to his home in Maholi. Raghavendra was declared dead at the hospital. Thirty-four days after the incident, the police solved the murder case and jailed Hindu priest Vikas Rathore alias Shivanand, along with Nirmal Singh and Aslam Ghazi.

Jamie's body was found in the parking lot of the Chandelier Apartments on Douglas Street after reports of gunfire just before midnight. He was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead the following afternoon. Following the incident, InfoWars founder Alex Jones wrote, "We are deeply saddened to inform you that InfoWars reporter Jamie White was brutally murdered Sunday night around midnight, in part due to the policies of Soros Austin, TX D.A. Jose Garza. We promise that Jamie's tragic death will not be in vain, and those responsible for this senseless violence will be brought to justice."

A witness said the altercation began when Rida asked the driver not to drive fast through a narrow street because of the presence of children. The man convicted of the journalist's murder was sentenced to 15 years in prison, which was later reduced to six years by the Federal Court of Cassation, affiliated with Iraq's Supreme Judicial Council. The court said the decision was based on the convict's young age, and stressed that he should be given "a chance to reform."

The journalists were part of a group documenting humanitarian relief efforts for those affected by Israel's genocidal war, particularly the aid distribution organized by the Al-Khair Foundation, a London-based charity. The attack occurred when an Israeli drone targeted a car carrying civilians, journalists, and photographers near a shelter in Beit Lahiya. The three killed journalists were local Palestinian media workers. According to Palestinian media and the Palestinian Journalists Safety Center, they were covering relief efforts at the time of the attack.

He lived in Gaza City with his wife, daughter, and three sons, but was in a displacement camp in Deir al Balah when he died.

Mohammed Abukar Dabashe, known as Dabaashe, was a freelance journalist for Sirta TV. He was on his way to work when the blast occurred, causing the building he was in to collapse. The terrorist group Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack, which targeted the convoy of Somalia's President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who was traveling in the Hamar Jajab district of Mogadishu. He was the first journalist killed in Somalia in 2025.

Alonzo had worked for three years as a community reporter with the Facebook news outlet Despertar Occidental until December 2024 and continued his work independently as the general manager of Producciones Alonzo, focusing on local news. He was also a member of the Association of Journalists and Communicators of the Southwest (APCSO). Reports indicate he had received threats, possibly related to his investigations into local criminal groups, though his family and colleagues were unaware of specific threats.

Israel killed two Palestinian journalists in separate attacks in Gaza on March 24, 2025. Palestine Today reporter Mohammad Mansoor Khan was killed in an airstrike north of Younis, while Al Jazeera Mubasher reporter Hossam Shabat was shot in his car on Salah al-Din Street in the north of the enclave. His car was targeted in the eastern part of Beit Lahiya. Reporting from Deir el-Balah in central Gaza, Al Jazeera's Tarek Abu Azzoum reported that Shabat, 23, had previously been injured in another Israeli attack, "but he insisted on continuing his news reporting in Gaza." Abu Azzoum said Israeli forces targeted his car without "any prior warning." Meanwhile, Mohammed Mansour, a 30-year-old Palestinian journalist killed in Khan Younis, worked as a reporter for the pro-Islamic Jihad, Beirut-based Palestine Today TV. He was killed in an Israeli airstrike on March 24, 2025, on his home in Khan Younis, southern Gaza. Mansour's wife was injured in the strike. According to Mansour's colleague, Ibrahim, "Mohammed Mansour's last coverage was on the evening of Sunday, March 23, 2025, when Israeli aircraft bombed a part of the Nasser Medical Complex west of Khan Younis. He was covering the situation live for the channel and then left for home." Mansour, along with his family, had been displaced from the southern city of Rafah and lived in a tent for the homeless until a few days before his death, when he moved with his wife to a rented apartment near his workplace in southern Khan Younis. Palestine Today TV said his companion, Mohammed Mansoor, was deliberately murdered.

Alexander Fedorchak, a 28-year-old war correspondent for the Russian daily newspaper Izvestia, was killed on March 24, 2025, in the Kharkiv region of Ukraine, specifically in the Kupyansk direction. The journalist died in a "Special Military Operation Zone," a term Russia uses for its attacks on Ukraine. Although Izvestia did not provide the exact reason, reports indicate that he, along with Zvezda TV cameraman Andrei Panov and driver Alexander Sirkeli, were killed in a Ukrainian rocket attack in the Russian-occupied Luhansk region, specifically in the Kreminna district. Three civilians, including a 14-year-old boy, were also killed in the attack. His last report aired on March 23, 2025, the day before his death.

Anna Prokofyeva, a military correspondent for Russia's state-run Channel One, was killed in a mine explosion near the Ukrainian border on March 26, 2025. According to Channel One, the incident occurred on the Russian side of the border in the Belgorod region. "Channel One war reporter Anna Prokofyeva died while performing her professional duty," the network said in a statement. "A Channel One film crew hit an enemy mine," the broadcaster added. Cameraman Dmitry Volkov was also injured in the blast. Anna Prokofyeva, 35, had been covering the war in Ukraine for Channel One since 2023. Her last post on Telegram showed her sitting in a forest wearing a military uniform and holding a camera to her head.

On March 26, 2025, Yemeni-Dutch journalist and filmmaker Musab al-Hattami was killed and his brother was injured in a drone strike while they were working near the Yemeni city of Marib. Al-Hattami emigrated from his native Yemen to Jordan, where he studied film, then moved to the Netherlands and became a citizen. He worked as a freelancer, making documentaries and writing for several outlets, including Al Jazeera. Al-Hattami had returned to Yemen a few days earlier with his wife to film a documentary about his parents' hometown. Three government soldiers were also killed in the attack. Al-Hattami is the 20th journalist to be killed in Yemen since 2015, when the Saudi-led coalition launched airstrikes against Houthi rebels who seized the Yemeni capital, Sanaa.

Suresh Rajak, a photojournalist for Avenues Television, died on March 28, 2025, in Kathmandu, Nepal. He lost his life while covering violent pro-monarchy protests in the Tinkune area. Rajak was capturing footage of the demonstration on the rooftop of a building when protesters set the building on fire. It is said that after clashes between security forces and protesters, the protesters thought the building was under police control. Trapped inside, Rajak was unable to escape and was burned alive. His charred body was later found on the third or fourth floor of the building, in a condition beyond recognition.
