Express and Explore Yourself

baby panda learning its first lesson, "Don't sit in mama's spot!"

As the expression goes "Life doesn't come with a manual. It comes with a mother," baby pandas at a research base in Chengdu City in southwest China's Sichuan Province were taught several harsh life lessons by their mother on Thursday. One of the video clips from the panda enclosure, captured a baby panda learning its first lesson, "Don't sit in mama's spot!" The unfortunate baby panda was sitting in the right spot at the wrong time. Mama panda won't let her favorite spot on her favorite tree be occupied by anyone - not even her own cub. Mama reached over and gripped her cub with her teeth and dragged him by the neck back on to the wooded platform. Baby panda must have thought it could get away with sitting in mama's spot without her noticing, but mama always has an eye out for her spot.

In another clip, mama teaches lesson number two, "Don't climb mama's tree!" Mama's naughty cub didn't even get far up the trunk when she darted towards it and forcefully knocked him off and reclaimed her favorite tree in victory. Baby panda must not have fully understood the first lesson, so this session was very necessary.

In the last clip one unlucky baby panda may have learned its harshest lesson yet, "Don't let mama see you have food." In what appears to be an innocent scene of mama cuddling baby, is in fact a cuddle fight for food. Mama panda could be seen locking her cub in a tight embrace as he struggles in vain to keep his delicious treat away from her. Unfortunately, baby must have learned by now that he doesn't stand a chance against mama as she knocks the delicious treat from his hands and feasts on her prize while he walks away in defeat.

Giant pandas look cute and harmless, but appearances can be deceptive. Pandas can be fierce and dangerous too. Even in captivity, where pandas are used to being cooed over by humans.
