A temporary market in northern Bolivia burned to the ground overnight on Tuesday (January 24) after a fire consumed it in a matter of hours. The market was located in the northern city of Riberalta in the department of Beni. It had recently been set up near the local bus terminal as a provisional structure while a more permanent market was under construction nearby. Residents poured out to watch firefighters battle the flames. Local authorities report that some 300 vendors lost everything. Police have not commented on what started the blaze, but are looking into the possibility of a short circuit. Local media reported that it spread unusually fast due to strong winds, the wooden framework and plastic roofing.
