Damascus residents took to the streets Saturday to protest against the US cruise missile attack on a Syrian airbase, with slogans including "US hands off Syria". Protesters demanded that the US should stop interfering with Syrian internal affairs. They show their support for the Syrian government's campaign to fight terrorist groups. Some even said Syria won't be a second Iraq the United States invaded under the pretext that the country possessed weapons of mass destruction.

"The US attack means nothing but failure. They took the chemical weapons as an excuse and launched this attack. They should know that Syria is not a second Iraq. They started the Iraqi war under the pretext that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction but they found nothing. They are doomed to failure if they want to copy it for Syria," said Hind, one protester. The United States launched 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles at the Shairat military base in central Syria, marking the US response to an alleged chemical attack on Tuesday in the rebel-held town of Khan Sheikhoun in the country's northwestern province of Idlib.

The United States believes that Syrian planes based at the Shairat airbase carried out the chemical attack which killed over 80 people and wounded scores of others. The Syrian government denied the accusation, saying its air strikes hit a rebel depot containing chemical materials.
