Miami firefighters battle a blaze at a marina near the Miami river

Chicago residents were hit by a strong lake-effect snow storm on March 14, which snarled traffic and caused headaches for commuters, local media reported. The snow, falling several inches per hour at times, is a result of the so-called 'lake effect.' Lake effect occurs when frigid air blows over the Great Lakes, gaining moisture and then dumping snowfall on shore, according to meteorologists.Commuters say it was practically a white-out storm at times, in which visibility is very limited. "It was insane. We could barely see. It was not visible at all," said commuter Maria Camacho. The National Weather Service has issued a lake-effect snow warning through Tuesday evening.
